Basically, when Islam rose up, they barred travel to Christians. When Christendom responded, they barred travel to Muslims. Only one group could go back and forth between the two: Jewish merchants. This made human trafficking very easy and very lucrative.

Kidnapping Ukrainian women and Polish children and bringing them down the human trafficking corridors into Turkey. Those corridors, by the way, are still active and humming with activity.
